IMO: the name explained

A pioneer for change

iMO is the name we have given to our new AI-powered practice and coaching tool, designed to help delegates continue their learning post training.

But what’s the story behind the name?

Contrary to some suggestions we’ve heard, it’s not shortform for “in monkey opinion”. But it’s certainly inspired by the origins of our company’s name.

In the 100th Monkey theory, Imo was the first young monkey to adapt her behaviour, in a way which 99 others later copied (read more about the 100th Monkey theory here).

This progressive primate worked out that washing her sweet potatoes in water would get rid of the unpleasant sandy grit that encrusted them. Imo’s innovation spread throughout her troop until a critical mass was reached; when the 100th one had adopted it, all troops on the island accepted this  behaviour as the norm.

Imo, then, was a catalyst for change – as we believe AI has the positive potential to be, in many parts of life. It may have a way to go to reach critical mass, but where we believe AI can have the greatest impact in our training is by enabling delegates to recall, apply and embed the learning they have taken from a session with our facilitators. In doing so, iMO tackles head on that most depressing of workplace realties: that training, no matter how engaging, is largely lost within weeks unless it is put into practice. When AI can help change that human behavioural trait, is when the tech becomes truly transformative.
